Mission

Hello! My name is Malena Peters and I decided to found this club in the summer of 2020. I started with the goal of raising $1,000 via GoFundMe that would go directly to UNICEF’S efforts in Yemen, which is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. Yemen’s conflict is complicated and multi-layered– from unethical arms sales to Saudi Arabian embargoes, it is more than the „famine“ it is often reduced to in mainstream media. In 2021, the conflict enters its seventh year, with no signs of lessening. The civilians are left to bear the brunt of the damages, as well as the effects of COVID-19.

I chose UNICEF as the charity I wanted to donate to because 16.07% of the money raised by UNICEF goes directly to education for Yemeni children, which is a larger portion than other 501c3 charities. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the number of children in Yemen without consistent schooling to 7.8 million.  I value education very highly in my own life, and am well aware and thankful for the opportunities education provides. Children everywhere should have the right to learn, a message which UNICEF’s progress in Yemen helps promote.

The bottom line is that I hope that my fundraiser and this website help raise awareness about the current situation in Yemen. I am lucky enough to have access to privileges such as education, housing, and meals, and as I continued to educate myself on the conflict it became clear that none of those three are normal constants in the lives of most Yemeni children. I truly believe that educating ourselves is the most important and impactful thing we can begin to do.
